CaptiveBy Jo-Anne McArthur In this follow-up to We Animals, Canadian photojournalist Jo-Anne McArthur explores zoos and aquariums and how “we” animals interact with “those” animals. With more than 100 photographs, Captive reveals the lives of animals in zoos and aquariums around the world. For over a decade, McArthur photographed animals kept in these facilities, and this book features images from more than 20 countries on five continents, shot most recently in 2016 while she was working with the Born Free Foundation in Europe. Contributions from Virginia McKenna, cofounder of the Born Free Foundation; philosopher Lori Gruen; and Ron Kagan, former CEO of the Detroit Zoological Society, are included. We’re at an important point in history right now: More than ever, ordinary people are thinking about the ethics of keeping animals in captivity for human entertainment. This reflection will help propel us into a new era of reconsidering our relationship with other animals. Captive aims to be a part of those important discussions.
