Harvey and the Lightning Herd
By Helga Tacreiter and PETA
Illustrated by Denise V. Tremblay
This new children’s book by the founder of The Cow Sanctuary in Bridgeton, New Jersey, and PETA was inspired by the true story of Helga Tacreiter’s friendship with a little calf named Harvey and how nursing him back to health after a disastrous storm led her to open a beautiful sanctuary and provide lifelong care to cows, pigs, and other farmed animals. Featuring enchanting illustrations, it’s an age-appropriate account of how Tacreiter, while working on a farm as a young woman, woke up to find that six calves had been orphaned when their mothers were struck by lightning overnight. She vowed to save them all and formed a special bond with Harvey. He became her inspiration for faux-fur “cowches”—life-size plush likenesses of real cows—by standing still so she could use him as her first moodel. By making and selling those cowches, she was able to buy an 80-acre farm, now the site of The Cow Sanctuary.
All proceeds from the sale of this book will go directly to The Cow Sanctuary.
Alec Baldwin Tells the Tale on Audible
The heartwarming tale is also available as an audiobook, narrated by award-winning actor and longtime PETA supporter Alec Baldwin.
“Harvey and the Lightning Herd is both a heartwarming tale of friendship and a testament to the power of kindness and compassion. I’m delighted to lend my voice to Harvey’s story, and hope it inspires children and parents alike to embrace their empathy for all living, feeling beings.” – Alec Baldwin
